Player and Rules
Uniforms and equipment
* Note: VMSA prefers players to purchase an infielder's mask as it is better protection of the player's face versus a mouthguard.
Fair Play Philosophy
We encourage everyone in VMSA and involved in the sport to keep in mind that in the most important sense, we are all on the same team. This applies to competitions inside our own organization, and competitions with others at tournaments, playoffs, provincial championships or interlocking games in the rep program.
The Fair Play Philosophy emphasizes the following:
- respecting the rules of the game
- respecting officials and accepting their decisions
- respecting the opponent
- providing similarity situated participants with equal opportunities
- maintaining dignity under all circumstances
- provide players with adequate coaching at all levels of play
We can easily fall into considering only our own interests, or those of our team, or our association. The Fair Play Philosophy reminds us that without the participation of others, we would not have a sport at all.

Obligations of Players
- You owe it to your teammates to attend practices and games consistently. Notify coach if unable to attend game or practice.
- Exhibit reasonable and acceptable behavior at all times.
- Take proper care of the team's equipment (uniforms, bats, catching equipment etc.).
- Treat players, coaches, managers, and officials with respect.
Team formation approach
Teams are formed by the Age Directors at each age category (e.g,, Squirt Director forms Squirt "C" teams) according to the following guidelines:
- Maximum of 15 players (17 in U19).. Teams of 12 to 13 are ideal though younger divisions can tolerate smaller teams, where older divisions cannot (too many conflicts). Teams that arrive with seven or fewer default automatically.
- Players can indicate on their registration form a desire to play with one friend, naming up to two alternate friends they wish to play with.
- New teams will be formed by placing friends and players from a geographical area on the same team as much as possible.
Coaches should not attempt to solicit players to play for a particular team. - Players wanting to move from a team before the season starts, will be allowed to request a transfer, but not to any specific other team. The Director will attempt to place the player on a new team, according to the overriding principle of balancing team strength.
- In general, no team may have fewer than 9 members. Smaller teams will generally be merged with other teams.
- In younger divisions, teams will generally be single birth year to promote team continuity over time. We know this means younger year teams will not be competitive with older year teams in the sport’s two year age bands, but we find that keeping kids with kids they know promotes retention in the sport.
- Directors may also consider team parity, which becomes more relevant in the older divisions.
House League Rules
Umpires are essential to the game. Bias is unacceptable, but umpire calls are part of the game. VMSA has a zero tolerance policy towards abuse of umpires. Any abuse whether by coaches, players or the gallery will result in ejection from the game of the offender(s) or default of the game.
To guide coaches and players, bear the following in mind:
- you may ask for explanations of calls ("What was the call?") and as usual request appeals on swings. Such requests should be respectfully phrased
- you may not question the judgement of the umpire (safe/out, strike/ball, etc.) by word or action within hearing/view of the umpires.
- Coaches are expected to control their players and advise their gallery.
- VMSA is especially concerned regarding intimidation of youth umpires by adults (whether coaches or gallery), and so the range of behaviours that are unacceptable is especially broad in this circumstance.
- do not count on receiving a warning
Any issues with officiating are to be brought to the attention of the VMSA UiC, umpire coordinator or President, not addressed with the umpires themselves, providing as many specifics as possible.

Playoff Tie-breaker Rule
Playoff format will be determined by the Division coordinator in consultation with the executive, and shall have final authority on format. Playoff games tied at the expiration of time will use international tie breaker rules until one team wins. International tie breaker has the last player out in the previous inning start the 10th inning at second base. If the game is still tied after 10 innings, subsequent innings shall start with players on 1st and 2nd. These shall be the the two players furthest from the next batter in the order.
Standings & Playoffs for House "C" Division
We do not keep team standings for our House teams. Our playoffs are determined by random draw.
